The kick-off of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and Africa Support Programme has taken place in Addis Ababa on 13-15 February 2017.
The Programme is piloted by the African Union Commission, Department of Human Resources Science and Technology (AUC/HRST), under a Delegation Agreement with the European Commission.
The GMES & Africa Programme is building on over 10 years of previous joint efforts and an EU contribution of over €70 million to build technical and institutional capacity in Africa to use Earth Observation data for policy-making and on a series of previous programmes such as PUMA, AMESD and lately MESA.
The kick-off hosted by the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa has gathered the key players in the project, including the European Commission (DG DEVCO and the Joint Research Center) and EUMETSAT. The meetings have also involved the team managing the MESA project (ending this year), to ensure a successful transition between the two key Programmes in the area of Earth Observation.
