More social protection for migrant workers in West Africa

The project “Support and advice to African public authorities responsible for migration and development initiatives along the migratory route to West Africa” (MeDAO Project), funded by the European Union and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation and implemented by the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Public Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), carries out capacity building activities in social protection of migrants.

A workshop on the sharing and exchanging of experiences for the African Operational Repertoire of Jobs and Professions (ROAME) took place on 2-6 July, 2012 in Cotonou within the framework of the MIEUX programme, a joint EU-ICMPD initiative. The ‘Access to Douala’ project aims at widening and reconstructing a 20-kilometre section of the access road to Douala in Cameroon. The current road is too poor to carry long-distance heavy traffic and lighter urban short-distance traffic. This creates permanent traffic jams, safety risks for pedestrians, bikers and motor bikers and is harmful for the environment.

The Nacala Corridor is a regional road/rail route which connects Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique, linking Lusaka to the port of Nacala. One Hoima resident explained the change and what it means for her: “Water is no longer the need I wake up to and fall to sleep with. Once hard, life is now soft!” she said. The Prevention, Positive Living and Empowerment initiative, or APPLE as it is more commonly known, is a European Commission-backed project which aims to curb the spread of the HIV and AIDS in Malawi and Mozambique. Through this project, support networks have been set up to provide testing, counseling and care services. Local organisations have also been trained in reducing the stigma associated with HIV and in awareness-raising among young people.

The jobs result from initiatives which stretch right across sectors such as road building, environmental protection or ensuring irrigation for food security. The focal sectors are agriculture and transport – between 2005 and 2009, 17 million trees were planted and 650 km rural roads rebuilt.

AMESD, the African Monitoring of the Environment for Sustainable Development programme, uses data from EUMETcast satellites to implement five regional projects covering climate and environmental themes.

The Mediterranean Electric Ring, MedRing, seeks to interconnect the Euro-Med electric power transmission grids of 22 countries around the Mediterranean basin.

MedRing involves linking electric power grids from Spain to Morocco, through the whole of North Africa, and onwards towards the Levant and Turkey. From Turkey, the ring would then link back into the European grid via Greece.

The Felou hydropower project is harnessing the natural power of the waterfalls on the Senegal river to produce low-cost, zero-emission hydroelectricity in an area suffering chronic electricity shortages.

Power generated by the Felou project will help meet growing demand. It will also provide an alternative to electricity produced by fossil-fuel-based thermal power stations, which is much more expensive, both in economic and environmental terms.
