The 1st Africa-EU Summit took place in Cairo on 3-4 April 2000, under the aegis of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and the European Union (EU). It was the first meeting at the continental level between European and African leaders. With the adoption in the Cairo Declaration, Leaders expressed their commitment to come together to give a new strategic dimension to the global partnership between Africa and Europe, in a spirit of equality, respect, alliance and cooperation. The Africa-EU Strategic Partnership was therefore conceived and formulated at this first meeting, and designed to become the formal political channel through which the EU and what will become the African Union (AU) dialogue and organise their cooperative relations.
